The best Cheltenham betting sites have odds for 28 races in 2025, including 14 Grade 1 affairs. The purpose of this page, however, is to focus on what has happened at the prestigious Cheltenham Racecourse in previous runnings.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

The race first ran under this title in 1978 and previously went by the Gloucestershire Hurdle, which often split into two divisions historically. Notable winners include Flyingbolt, L’Escargot, Bula, Golden Cygnet, Like-A-Butterfly, Brave Inca and Douvan.

Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase

The Arkle is one of the most eagerly anticipated races on the Cheltenham Festival Schedule in any year. First ran under this title in 1969 and honours legendary three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner of the same name.

Notable winners before 2016 include Fortria, Flyingbolt, Pendil, Remittance Man, Moscow Flyer, Sprinter Sacre and Un De Sceaux.

Officially registered as the Festival Trophy Handicap Chase and formerly the National Hunt Handicap Chase, this 3m 1f Premier Handicap has a recent history of back-to-back winners (as you will see when producing recent winners table).

David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle

Introduced in 2008 and dominated in its early years by record six-time winner Quevega. Last year’s winner and among the Cheltenham favourites this year, Lossiemouth, is among the most famous Cheltenham race winners today.

Cheltenham Champion Hurdle Winners

First run in 1927, we’ve nearly had a century of this championship race. The golden era occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. But notable winners before that include Brown Jack, National Spirit, Hatton’s Grace, Sir Ken, and Persian War.

Legends from the golden age of the Champion Hurdle include Bula, Comedy of Errors, Night Nurse, Monksfield, Sea Pigeon, Dawn Run, and See You Then. In more modern times, but before 2016, Istabraq, Hardy Eustace, Hurricane Fly and Faugheen stand out as notable winners.

From 2020 to 2024, Cheltenham Festival odds betting favourites have won the race.

Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

A four-year-olds only Premier Handicap added to the Festival in 2005, this race is often won by precocious or well-handicapped horses that don’t go for the Triumph Hurdle.

Unlike that race, the roll of honour doesn’t really have any champions on it.

National Hunt Chase

One of the oldest Cheltenham races today at this or any meeting, the event predates the Festival, dating back to 1860. It has been held continuously at Cheltenham since 1911, apart from when racing was suspended due to World Wars I & II.

From 2025 onwards, it became a handicap for horses rated up to 145.

Turners Novices’ Hurdle

Registered as the Baring Bingham and initially known as the Aldsworth Hurdle. Inaugurated in 1971, this race has had various sponsored titles throughout its history. These include the (Royal &) Sun Alliance Novices’ Hurdle, Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, and Neptune Novices’ Hurdle.

In 2024, it became the Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse. Notable winners before 2015 include Danoli, Istabraq, Hardy Eustace, The New One, and Faugheen.

Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle

Introduced in 1993, this is a Premier Handicap run over an intermediate trip of 2m 5f. It has just one multiple winner in its 30+ year history. The Harry Skelton-trained Langer Dan made history by winning the 2023 and 2024 runnings of the race.

Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase

Inaugurated in 2005 as a handicap. This race is run over three circuits of the inner Cross Country course of about 3m 6f. It became a conditions race in 2016 and reverts back to a limited handicap in 2025.

The legendary Tiger Roll has done more than any other horse in the race’s short history to put this event on the map with three victories. Although he has won five times at the Festival in total.

Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Winners

Long predating the Festival (1834), this two-mile Premier Handicap Chase has taken place at Cheltenham since 1913, except during the two World Wars. Named in honour of Cheltenham winners, it features a rich history.

Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle

Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle

Inaugurated in 1974 as the Coral Golden Hurdle Final, this 3m Premier Handicap for staying hurdlers has had its current sponsors since 2002.

There are several qualifiers held from October to February at racecourses in the UK and Ireland. From the 2024-25 season onwards, if you win one of those and are within the handicap at final declarations, then you are guaranteed a run in the final.

The veteran Willie Wumpkins won this three times in a row. Forgive ‘N Forget is another notable winner before 2015.

Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase

An amateur riders’ only handicap chase for horses rated up to 145 over 3m 2f, and named after Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir – one a trainer, the other a cavalry officer who died in WW2. First run in 1946.

Nicolaus Silver and Ballabriggs are Kim Muir winners who went on to win the Grand National. Cool Ground won the Gold Cup.

JCB Triumph Hurdle

A four-year-old-only championship race that became part of the Cheltenham Festival in 1968. Initially at Hurst Park and then the April Meeting at Cheltenham when Persian War won in 1967, it’s one of the key Cheltenham tips for Gold Cup day for many punters.

County Hurdle

The only Premier Handicap scheduled for Gold Cup Day. Established in 1920 and run as the last race at the Festival for many years, it moved to its current slot of second on the Gold Cup card in 2009.

The County Hurdle roll of honour includes Floyd, Willsford and Rooster Booster.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Cheltenham Gold Cup Winners

The pinnacle of National Hunt racing and the centrepiece of the Cheltenham Festival. Dating back 100 years to 1924, the Gold Cup – not to be confused with an earlier Flat race of the same name – has created many of the true superstars and legends of the sport.

Famous winners in the 20th Century include Easter Hero and Golden Miller (both interwar period). Also, Fortria, Cottage Rake (immediate postwar years), Arkle (1960s), L’Escargot (early 1970s). Furthermore, Dawn Run and Desert Orchid (both second half of 1980s).

Festival Hunter Chase

The Hunter Chase at the Festival with horses usually ridden by amateur jockeys. The race is over the same extended 3m 2f course and distance as the Gold Cup. Inaugurated in 1904, there are strict qualifying criteria. For example, a horse must have won a Point-to-Point and finished first or second in a hunter chase.

Halloween, the 1951 winner, went on to land the King George. Grittar (successful 30 years later) was a subsequent winner of the Grand National.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

Introduced in 2009, this 0-145 handicap hurdle is now the last race at the Cheltenham Festival. Only conditional jockeys may ride in it.

Early wins in the race helped launch the careers of Sir Des Champs and Don Poli.
