The Hunter Chase at the Festival with horses usually ridden by amateur jockeys. The race is over the same extended 3m 2f course and distance as the Gold Cup. Inaugurated in 1904, there are strict qualifying criteria. For example, a horse must have won a Point-to-Point and finished first or second in a hunter chase.
Halloween, the 1951 winner, went on to land the King George. Grittar (successful 30 years later) was a subsequent winner of the Grand National.

Cheltenham winners owe much to the trainers that guide them to success. Here are the most successful Cheltenham Festival trainers and a list of their respective achievements.
Mullins is the most successful trainer in Cheltenham Festival history. The Irishman became the first trainer to register a century of wins in the Festival in 2024 and is not done yet. The Kilkenny-born trainer claimed his first victory at Cheltenham courtesy of Tourist Attraction in 1995 – the first of 103 Cheltenham Festival winners (as of 2024).
Henderson holds the mantle of the most successful British trainer in the history of the Cheltenham Festival, with 74. Some of the most impressive Cheltenham Festival results have the Enlishman’s name next to them.
Popular trainer Nicholls is the only active trainer to have guided three horses to Cheltenham Gold Cup victories. Gloucester-born Nicholls also has one of the best overall records at the Festival, with 49 winners as of 2024. A large number of the Cheltenham Festival’s most outstanding horses have come from Nicholl’s stables.
In 2007 at just 29, the Irishman became the youngest trainer at the time to win the Grand National. Elliott has tallied up 40 Cheltenham races winners today, with more expected to come. The Meath native won back-to-back top trainer awards at the Festival in 2017 and 2018.
